About RAREC
The Rutgers Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Upper Deerfield (Cumberland County) generates and dispenses research applicable to the production of high-quality vegetable crops, ornamentals, field crops, and tree and small fruits, with special emphasis on crop protection and integrated pest management. The center stimulates the production of crops with maximum benefit to the New Jersey economy and minimum risk to the environment
Agrivoltaics at RAREC
Designed to study the performance of specialty and agronomic crops under single-axis tracker arrays. The rows are oriented North-South and the panels track the sun from sunrise to sunset to increase energy collection and provide more uniform shading conditions
Initial crop rotations include tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, spinach, soybeans, cereal rye
The installation is a randomized, replicated, controlled experiment for evaluating and comparing three treatments:
- Single-row single-axis tracker arrays
- Double-row single-axis tracker arrays
- Control (open sky)
